Judged By The Law
The law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. Romans 7:12.
Many people advocate doing away with all law until it begins to impact their own lives. What would happen if travelers got out on the roadways of the world without signposts, speed limits, rights-of-way, and stoplights? What would happen if planes took to the skies without air traffic control? Who would enjoy sports without rules or boundaries? Basic laws are necessary, just like rules of the game are necessary. When the guilty are judged by the law, there are consequences. Likewise, there is a penalty to pay when we transgress the laws of God. When we violate His perfect law, it proves we do not measure up and sin overtakes us. So what are we to do? God gives us the answer. He sent His only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty of breaking God’s law. Jesus alone paid the price to redeem us from our guilt and shame. Through the shed blood of Christ on the cross, He said to the world, “I forgive you.” The question is whether we are willing to admit our sin and turn from it and believe that Christ is the answer to fulfilling the law of God. He will bring peace to our hearts and give us a new pathway to walk. “[God] condemned sin . . . that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled” (Romans 8:3–4).

Forgive One Another
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Luke 6:31 NIV
Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful words in the human vocabulary and is best illustrated by God’s forgiveness of sin. When someone sins against us, they bear a terrible guilt. Likewise, when we refuse to forgive a wrong, we become part of the problem. When God’s people practice forgiveness, sweetness replaces harshness. We cannot force another to have a spirit of forgiveness, but we can demonstrate it by how we react. It is not always possible to mend a broken relationship. Some people refuse to accept responsibility for what they have done, always blaming someone else for what happened. Be willing to go the extra mile in an effort to be reconciled with someone who has turned against you, and remember always to pray for them. Remember to treat others as you would like to be treated. A marvelous example of this is revealed in the life of Joseph. His brothers were jealous of him and sold him into slavery. But as the Old Testament story unfolds in Genesis 50, we see that Joseph did not hold it against them. The Lord used Joseph to save his family, and even a whole nation. Because of Joseph’s forgiveness, he was blessed of God. If we cannot find it in our hearts to forgive within our own family, we will never exhibit this attribute of Christ with others and know God’s blessings.

Blessed Hope
“They will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.” Luke 21:27.
The Bible says the state of the world will grow darker as we near the end of the age. This is evident when even news reporters ask the question: “What is the world coming to?” The Bible gives the answers. The end of the world as we know it will culminate with Jesus Christ coming again as the King triumphant. For those who don’t settle the state of their souls in light of this truth, their future is dark indeed. The Bible says that the god of this age (Satan) has blinded the eyes of those who don’t believe God’s truth so that the light of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ will have no impact (2 Corinthians 4:4). They have more faith in mankind’s empty promises than the God who created them and holds the future in His hands. There’s coming a time when the Antichrist will take the world by storm, promising peace. His popularity will lure hearts and deceive minds. The human race will be caught up in exhilaration, believing the Antichrist alone will solve their dilemmas and bring global tranquility. This is why God’s Word proclaims: “Be saved from this perverse generation” (Acts 2:40). But when the King of glory breaks through the storm clouds, He will reveal to the world the great deceiver and gather to Himself all those who belong to Him.

Christ’s Sacrifice
Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows. Isaiah 53:4.
God did not exclude himself from human suffering. He became man—the Person of Christ. We’ve read stories, seen paintings, and sat through numerous Christmas pageants about the birth of Jesus, focusing on the sweetness of it all, but Jesus’ life was in peril from the time He uttered His first cry. The most illustrious Child ever born was hated by many while He lay in a manger. We don’t know much about His life as a child, but His entire life was one of humiliation. He came not as a conquering king but as a humble servant. When He was an adult, the leaders were suspicious of this carpenter from Nazareth, because He was a threat to them. They scorned Him and treated Him with contempt. They said He broke God’s law, that He was an unholy person—a drunkard and one who made friends with the scum of society. He had the label of “guilt by association” stamped upon Him by self-righteous men. At the beginning of His ministry, His own “townsfolk” at Nazareth tried to throw Him off a cliff. Religious and political leaders often conspired to seize and kill Him. He knew the path of pain He would experience, yet He went to the cross for us. Oh, what love, mercy, and salvation! No man has ever endured—or will endure—what Christ did voluntarily for us.

Bewared Of Being Misled
“Beware of false prophets.” Matthew 7:15.
Almost since the dawn of the human race, people have tried to discern the future. Millions of people read their horoscopes daily, trying to find some guidance. Only God knows the future. Many look to the stars, the tea leaves, or the lines on the palm of the hand to find confidence in the future. Some of these attempts to learn what the future holds are merely foolish or useless, but others involve occult practices that can bring people into contact with spiritual forces that are not from God but Satan. This is one reason the Bible tells us to avoid any practice that may be linked with the occult. Astrology can never provide the answers to life’s deepest questions. If our minds are not filled with God’s truth, something else will take His place: cynicism, occultism, false religions and philosophies. It’s Satan’s purpose to steal the seed of truth from our hearts by sending distracting thoughts, clever deceptions. People have always been caught up in whatever appears to be the most bizarre, looking for truth and settling for folly. The occult is clever in reaching seekers who want to experience a rush of any kind. Jesus told us not to be misled by the voices of strangers; there are so many strange voices being heard in the world. He is the embodiment of all truth. The only answer to man’s search is found in Him.

Faith And Works
Fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power. 2 Thessalonians 1:11.
There is always debate about the doctrines of faith and works—and which should come first. Which carries the most weight with God? Jesus Christ did not offer us a choice of faith or works. The Scripture teaches that works without faith have no meaning to God, because we cannot work our way to Heaven. Those who seek to testify of what they think is their goodness often talk about paying their taxes on time, never defrauding anyone, being faithful to their spouse, and giving to charity. But God is clear that our righteousness is like a filthy rag. There is nothing we can do to measure up to God’s standard. Once we are saved, however, God expects us not to be hearers of the Word only but doers as well. Works, when we are in Christ, are an extension of Christ’s ministry. In fact, works are not ends in themselves, but they demonstrate God’s love toward others so that they will know God loves them, and so that they will desire to learn about God’s provision for every need. The Bible says a man in a ditch is not helped if we pass by him, wish him well, and tell him of God’s love (Luke 10:25–37). No, God’s love is demonstrated by attending to the man’s physical needs and helping him out of the ditch.

A High Calling
“You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14.
God wants us to consult Him above all. When we read the Bible and commit every decision to prayer in the name of the Lord Jesus, asking for His direction, He will lead through the illumination of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. Many people believe that service to God can only be done in the church or in a Christian organization. While this is a worthy calling, it does not necessarily mean that God doesn’t call many others to serve Him in other vocations. It is a high calling to live the Christian life in the midst of those who do not know Jesus. We are called to serve Christ in our sphere of influence. Consider Joseph, who was sold into slavery but lived a godly life in the midst of a pagan kingdom and was used by God to bring salvation to his own nation. Daniel and his three Hebrew friends did the same when they were exiled to Babylon. The biblical principle of Christians being salt and light speaks of the influence they can have for the good of society as they live according to God’s truth. Christians at work in the world are the only real spiritual light in the midst of great spiritual darkness. This places a tremendous responsibility on us, but it is also a great privilege to live for Christ.

The One Who Brings Freedom
“He who believes in the Son has everlasting life.” John 3:36.
No one belonging to the human race is capable of bringing any kind of lasting peace to the world. The flaw in human nature is too great. History gives account to the social order called communism that emerged as one of the most powerful ideologies of all time. It challenged every concept man had ever held and threatened the whole world. Only one Man that is not of this world can bring hope for a better future. While some countries have won freedom from bondage, others are in danger of exchanging freedom for bondage. We have seen freedom of speech give license to spewing hate and tolerance, skewing right and wrong. Some freedom-lovers value laws based on moral standards while others fight for laws that uphold the debasement of immorality. Some want to change what God has defined as evil and define it as good. Who is the Man of hope who brings true freedom? His name is Jesus Christ. Hope rests in Him alone, and He is going to return to Earth someday in judgment. No government can prevent it, no individual can escape it, and those who refuse to embrace its reality will never change its certainty. Mankind may not be looking for Him, but all mankind will come face-to-face with the One who desires every soul to come to Him; salvation is found in no one else.

The Highest Belief
The law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. Galatians 3:24 ESV.
The Ten Commandments are founded on God’s great love for us and are designed to help us live obedient lives. They are just as valid today as they were when God gave them. They reflect the moral character of God, and they also provide the foundation of right living with others. Obedience to God’s commandments doesn’t flow naturally out of a heart of love for God. We may trick ourselves into believing we keep all the commandments, but the truth is, people violate them every day. The Bible tells us that the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord “with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37). Violating this command is what constitutes the worst sin. God’s standard is His own standard of perfection and righteousness, and because men and women have rebelled against Him, He devised a way to bring us back to Him by sending His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sin and bring us back into fellowship with our Creator. Faith in this truth that He is the Redeemer of human souls is the highest belief people can have in this world. Believers in Christ owe God a life of undivided devotion, obedience, and service; this is what it means to love the Lord your God with completeness.

No Boundaries
“Before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.” Isaiah 65:24.
Before the great flood of Noah’s time, people communicated in one language. After the flood, another crisis emerged when the people again revolted against God. Defiant of God’s laws and provisions, they wanted to reach into the heavens by building a tower designed to rise above everything else in the world. Judgment fell upon the human race, and God confused the languages. The name of the place was called Babel, which means “to confuse.” The Bible records that the Lord scattered them over all the Earth, and because of mankind’s rebellion against Him, we experience difficult communications among the nations even today. But God’s Word is not limited by language or culture. With the invention of the printing press and the tremendous advances in learning linguistics, God’s Word is readily available in hundreds of languages around the world. Likewise, prayers have no boundaries. God can hear and understand the prayers of those who earnestly seek Him. For those who have never accepted Christ as personal Savior and Lord, the Bible says: “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). To those who walk with Him, the Lord declares that His ear is not “dull, that it cannot hear” (Isaiah 59:1 ESV).

Our True Home
Here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come. Hebrews 13:14.
The Bible assures us that Heaven is a definite place. Jesus said, “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also” (John 14:2–3). But we all have to be saved in Christ to be assured of a heavenly home someday. Today homeless people can be found just about everywhere throughout the world. During cold spells many street people suffer and some die. Those of us who have comfortable homes may want to help those who are less fortunate, but deep inside we may think, I’m just glad I have a bed tonight, a warm house, and food to eat. In some ways, Christians are homeless. Our true home is waiting for us, prepared by the Lord Jesus Christ. If we look at the beauty He has created on Earth, can we comprehend what He has furnished for us in Heaven? How is this hope attained? By repenting of sin and looking to the Savior of the world for forgiveness.

The Kingdom Within Us
He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 1 John 4:4.
Believers in Jesus are members of God’s kingdom. The Bible says that the kingdom of God is within them. While good citizens (many who are believers in Christ) give allegiance to their country, Christians also give ultimate allegiance to the highest authority—almighty God—while still living in an alien world as pilgrims and strangers. The world as it is known is under the rule and reign of the prince of this world—Satan. But from the cross of Christ, Jesus has conquered Satan, and all those who have accepted Jesus as Lord have been reconciled to God. Jesus dwells within the believer through His Holy Spirit, and He desires that all people know the joy of His great salvation. The crucified and risen King has all authority, and His indwelling Spirit is greater than Satan and his demon powers. The signs of the kingdom are not political, although they may have political implications. Jesus’ signs were given to lead people to faith in Him, not to political reform. Jesus, by His Spirit, draws sinners to the cross, leading men and women to reconciliation with God, which then produces peace in the hearts of those who believe in Him. His kingdom will one day come to this Earth. In the meantime, God reigns supreme over the world, leading it providentially toward His perfect will.

The Fight Against Aging
Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. 2 Corinthians 4:16.
NLT From the moment a child is born, the fight against aging and death begins. The mother devotes years to protecting her child. In spite of her loving care, the child has already begun to die. The tangible signs of aging happen. Glasses will be needed to help improve our fading vision. Skin will wrinkle and sag; shoulders will droop and steps become slower and less sure. The brittleness of the bones increases and energy fades. Everyone living today will be dead a hundred years from now, or very close to death. So we are faced with the question: Is old age only a cruel burden that grows heavier as the years go by, or can there be something more? Someday life will be over, no matter how much attention is given to staying fit and healthy. More important than keeping the body healthy is to prepare the soul for eternity with the Lord Jesus Christ. Too many nourish the body and starve the soul. God has conquered death for us through His finished work on the cross. But He requires each person to confess and renounce sin and turn by faith to His Son, Jesus Christ. When this happens, a soul is born again, and in spite of the body that grows old, the soul is filled with hope and eternal joy.

The Tragic Snarl
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 1 Corinthians 15:22.
Adam was the fountainhead of the human race. He sprang up by the hand of God like a crystal-clear spring from the ground. Adam was permitted to choose whether he would become a river running through pleasant green pastures or a muddy torrent. God isn’t to blame for the tragic snarl in which the world has so long found itself. The fault lies squarely with Adam—Adam who chose to listen to the lies of the tempter Satan rather than the truth of God! The history of the human race from that day has been the story of mankind’s futile effort to gain back the position that was lost by Adam’s fall. Mankind attempts to excuse away sin, believing somehow it can improve itself by improving its environment. Yet the first sin was committed in God’s perfect environment. Think of the cold, dark river that runs at the bottom of the deep, dreary gorge. Why doesn’t this river make its way back up to the warm, pleasant fields that lie above it? Because it can’t; it has no power within itself. In despair, we turn against God and blame Him—finding fault with His mercy and love. Humanity is called to be humble before God, who will forgive and grant salvation.

No Room For Doubt
“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:13.
No matter how terrible our sins, God loves us. Were it not for the love of God, none of us would ever have a chance in the future life. The Bible tells us that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. What a statement! The promises of God’s love and forgiveness are real because His Word is real. The human language cannot adequately describe something so wonderful, but God’s Word is absolute. Until you actually accept God’s love and forgiveness, until you actually possess true peace with God, no one can describe its wonders to you. It’s not something that you do with your mind. Your finite mind isn’t capable of dealing with anything as great as the love of God. Our minds have difficulty explaining how a black cow can eat green grass and give white milk—but we drink and are nourished by it. We can’t understand radio, but we listen. The mind can’t explain the electricity that creates light—but we know it’s there. God’s love must be received by putting faith in Him completely, accepting His forgiveness of sin totally. When that happens, there isn’t any room for doubt. You cannot do this on anyone else’s word. Put the Lord first in life and you will know His love.

God’s Love Letter
“I have loved you with an everlasting love . . . with lovingkindness I have drawn you.” Jeremiah 31:3.
Often people make judgments about the Bible without ever picking it up and reading it. These judgments are passed on to others and believed. It is man, and not the Bible, that needs correcting. We must discover the Bible for ourselves. There is a great deal of inaccurate teaching about the Bible, portraying a different God in the Old and New Testaments. Too many people talk about the God of wrath in the Old Testament and a God of love and peace in the New Testament. But God is the same throughout the Bible. The Old Testament tells us that God is holy and pure, and He punishes those who rebel against Him. But the New Testament tells us the same thing. In fact, some of the strongest warnings about judgment in the Bible come from the lips of Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew 7:14). The New Testament certainly stresses God’s love and mercy. In fact, it gives us the greatest proof that God loves us: He sent His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to die in our place, and by His grace we can receive His salvation. But the Old Testament also tells us repeatedly about God’s love for us. The Bible will always be the center of controversy, but it is still God’s love letter to us.

We Will See Him As He Is
It is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts. 2 Corinthians 4:6.
The Bible does not tell us what Jesus looked like. There have never been accurate paintings or drawings made of Him during His lifetime. Artists throughout the centuries have tried to imagine what He must have looked like, but the truth is, we don’t know. God knew that if we had an accurate portrait of Jesus in human form, we would be tempted to worship the picture instead of Jesus Himself. But someday we will know what the risen Christ looks like, for someday we’ll enter into His very presence forever. For Christians, the Bible says, “we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2 KJV). When we pray to the Lord Jesus Christ, may we have in our minds and hearts the sacrifice He made for us on the cross. May we hold in our hearts the gift of His wonderful grace and bow to Him with our eyes fixed upon the nail prints in His hands, giving Him praise and glory for overcoming death and the grave so that we can live with Him for eternity. When we look at Jesus, may we see the light of His glory. This comes through knowledge of Him that comes through reading and studying His Word, for He is the Word of truth.

Our Security
[Take] the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Ephesians 6:16.
The devil and his demons know God exists. The demon world also believes in the facts of Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrection. But their belief is not a saving belief because it does not lead them to turn to God in repentance. A saving belief in God is what happens when sinners turn from sin to Christ and put their trust and faith in Him. It involves not only an intellectual acceptance of certain facts about God and Jesus. It involves complete surrender and committing to living an obedient life according to God’s Word. This means to turn away from the former life and walk in new life with Him. Jesus Christ gives us this ability, but we must follow. The Bible tells us over and over again of God’s love and warns us constantly of the devil who wants to come between us and God. Satan is ever waiting to ensnare our souls. But when our minds are on the things of God, Satan has little room to maneuver. Satan does not care how much we theorize about Christianity or how much we profess to know about Christ. What he opposes vigorously is the way we live for Christ. We must not give Satan a foothold but discipline ourselves to stay close to God. He alone is our security.

The Brevity Of Life
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things. Psalm 119:37.
Many today find the idea of reincarnation attractive—the belief that after we die we come back to Earth. Some people are influenced by other religions; others simply like the thought of being able to live out multiple experiences. The Bible is clear: reincarnation isn’t true, and the life we’re leading now is the only one we’ll ever live. Once we die, we go into eternity—either to Heaven to be with God forever, or to that place the Bible calls Hell, where we will be eternally separated from God and His blessings. What difference should this make? First, it gives urgency to our lives right now. God’s plan for each person is one life. There is no chance after death to do life over again. One life is all we have, and it is gone in the blink of an eye. Sometimes we get tired of the burdens of life and wish we could start all over again. We can, with God. He desires that we walk His way through the one life He has granted us. The Bible has much to say about the brevity of life and the necessity of preparing for eternity. Only when a person is prepared to die is he or she also prepared to live. Oh, that we would pray to the Lord to turn our eyes from worthless things and receive the life God wants us to live.

A Deadly Disease
Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:24–25.
Sin is the most serious thing man will ever deal with. Sin is a spiritual virus that invades our whole being. It makes us morally and spiritually weak. It’s a deadly disease that infects every part of us: our bodies, our minds, our emotions, our relationships, our motives. We don’t have the strength on our own to overcome its power. But when we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells in us. When this happens, any sin that comes in begins to fester, and God’s Spirit reveals it to us. The Holy Spirit tugs at our souls to get our attention, telling us that we are not right with God. The cause of trouble, the root of all sorrow, the dread of every man lies in this one small word—sin. We all have this terminal disease and it’s far worse than the flu or even cancer. It has crippled the nature of man and has caused man to be caught in the devil’s trap! Sin is the great clogger, and the blood of Christ is the great cleanser. We don’t need to be crippled any longer by the disease of sin because God has provided the cure. “The blood of Jesus Christ . . . cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7), and He will give us the power to turn from sin.
